Gear Review: HMK Action 2 Jacket
If falling down your ramp after you load your sled or riding in tight trees are your main sources of entertainment, you’re going to need to wrap yourself in something that can sustain these continuous horrible beatings. The first thing I noticed about the HMK Action 2 Jacket is how tough the outer fabric is; it even smells durable.
The Action 2 Jacket is made from Cascade Ballistic material and would suggest that perhaps it would withstand a barrage of explosive projectiles such as missiles or rockets; not the case (or at least we didn’t test for it). What it did withstand was riding in tight trees with low hanging branches threatening to tear my outerwear to ribbons; the material didn’t tear or even scuff.
The removable inner liner is good for really cold days, but reduced mobility in the arms. However, once the zip-in liner and hood were removed the jacket felt light and unrestrictive allowing me to move freely on my machine.
The outer fabric repelled water nicely, but keep in mind the Action 2 doesn’t have a Gore-Tex liner, so on the wet, rainy days this may not be the right layer. Though, we’re told by HMK that though it’s not Gore-Tex, it does have the same ePTFE coating as Gore-Tex, so you should expect similar performance. The taped seams keep the moisture out on the stitching and the powder skirt kept the snow from creeping inside the jacket.
There is no shortage of pockets with the outer ones utilizing waterproof zippers that work quite well at keeping the contents dry. A nice surprise – the inner goggle pocket was actually big enough to hold two pairs to dry out. As an added bonus, there is enough pocket room to keep 371 rounds of 12 gauge 2 ¾’’ target load, but maybe you would rather keep snacks, googles, survival gear, keys or whatever in them. Your choice.
If you start smoking because you buried your turbo Viper in a tree well and you’ve excavated enough snow and cut down enough trees that you think you may need a permit, crack open the pit zips to vent some of that heat because hypothermia isn’t sweet. I found the length of the Action 2 to be a little short so I would recommend bib pants underneath and to use the powder skirt on the deep days.
