Lynx Adventure: Snowmobile Expedition to the South Pole

A Finnish expedition team will set out on December 21, 2016 in an attempt to cross 4,400km of Antarctica on snowmobiles.

The four man team, led by celebrated Finnish explorer Patrick “Pata” Degerman, will set out on Lynx snowmobiles in an effort to reach the South Pole within 10 days.

This is the third edition of the Lynx Adventure Series sponsored by BRP, but it is the first for this particular expedition team. Two of the team members are experienced Antarctic explorers, and two are not.

And none of them is an experienced sledder.

The team will face bitter cold, changing snow conditions, crevasses and mountains along its route to the center of the continent. Part of the expedition includes making the summit of a unconquered mountain, with the goal of naming it Mount Suomi (Finland in the Finnish language) in honour of the country’s 100th year of independence.

The team will ride BRP’s Lynx Commander Touratech snowmobiles and Lynx riding gear. The sleds are powered by BRP’s 800 E-tec engine.

The concept is really exciting, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. The conditions will be hard on the equipment, and given that the team of explorers has little to no experience operating snowmobiles, the expedition really has the potential to go awry over such a long distance.
