It is NOT a replacement for a transceiver or other safety equipment, but it is a great additional tool to carry. The new messenger gives you the option to pre-program a text message and/or e-mail you’d like to attach to an outgoing signal. You can pre-program this message on their website once you register the unit.
I purchased my SPOT messenger near the end of last season and used it on our annual Chatter Trip. It was great!! I sent an e-mail to my wife via SPOT a few times a day the three days we stayed at the cabins. When you have limited or no contact methods for several days it is extremely helpful.
