Spring is here!

Spring is here and as some put their machines into hibernation others are off putting the miles on exploring and traveling great distances through the backcountry.  As I admire the will it must take for the first group to put their stabilizer in, and fog the carbs, I am part of the latter group…

Spring is the ultimate time of year to go to new zones, and maybe even drop into that zone past the last track that turned back, however we must constantly keep in mind that when things slide in the spring, they tend to slide BIG!

As layers form throughout the course of the season instabilities form throughout the snowpack leaving lingering unstable layers awaiting that perfect 600 pound trigger!  This year more so then other recent years has a few of these nasty layers.  Seemingly unbiased to what part of the mountains you are from, these layers are now coming alive with activity.  I’m sure this article could have been published a few weeks ago, but the fact is, slopes are still coming down, and a gentle reminder of what is out there is never a bad thing.

By avoiding large unsupported slopes, convex rolls, and cornices, are just a few things to look out for.  If you are unfermilure with any of these terms, or feel uncomfortable negotiating terrain, there are many different avalanche courses available throughout the winter season!  Keep an eye on our site throughout the summer and we’ll post ANY courses being offered they we are made aware of.

Here at Sledshot.com we are encouraging as many people as possible to become educated before getting into the backcountry because you are not only putting your life at risk, but everyone else’s as well!

Until next time, have fun, be careful, and keep that track spinning!
