Video: Avalanche engulfs Everest Base Camp

Warning: strong language and visuals

This footage, posted by YouTube user, Jost kobusch, shows the moment that the 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, triggering a massive avalanche to come down on the unsuspecting mass of climbers there. At least 18 climbers have died as a result of the disastrous slide that destroyed a portion of the base camp.

The footage is a scary reminder that things can go tragically wrong in an instant in the mountains, whether you’re skiing, climbing or sledding. Our condolences go out to the family members of the climbers and mountaineering community at large.

To everyone who is still out there riding this season; Stay safe.
