2022 Polaris Snowmobile Mountain Lineup
For 2022, Polaris Snowmobiles has unleashed a monster model year release for mountain sledders, with an answer to many of the demands riders have made in the last couple of years.
Short tunnel? Check. New body style? Check. And we saved the best for last—factory 2-stroke turbo power! Check!
So strap in as we share what the 2022 Polaris snowmobile mountain lineup has in store for riders.
2022 Polaris Snowmobile Mountain Lineup
Patriot Boost
Alright mountain sledders, this is what you’ve been waiting for—a factory 2-stroke turbocharged engine from Polaris, called Patriot Boost.
We’ll give you the abbreviated version here, since this article deals more with what 2022 Polaris snowmobiles will be available.
Full details on Polaris’ Patriot Boost engine are available here!
Basically, Patriot Boost is a pump gas (91 octane), 2-stroke turbocharged version of the 850 Patriot engine that will boost up to a maximum of 9 psi at 10,000 ft (3000 m). 9 psi! There’s no tuning to be done—the boost is entirely controlled by the ECU.
In a nutshell, the forced-induction Patriot Boost engine will provide 10% more power at sea level, rising to 50% more power at 10,000 ft (3000 m) than its naturally-aspirated sibling, the 850 Patriot, at the same elevation.
Above 10,000 ft the engine will hold at max boost pressure, but it won’t boost any further to compensate for additional altitude beyond that point.

RMK KHAOS MATRYX and PRO RMK MATRYX
In addition to the AXYS platform that we all know and love by now (which will still be available in 2022 models BTW—more on that below), for 2022, Polaris mountain sleds will primarily take the leap to the MATRYX platform.
We saw a limited release of the MATRYX platform for model year 2021 in a couple of INDY models and a Switchback Assault crossover. However, MATRYX is the clear path forward for Polaris.

Polaris says that the MATRYX platform uses their most advanced technology—like cast and bonded parts for example—to improve on the handling and deep snow performance of the AXYS platform for mountain riders.
While the MATRYX does carry over much of the same chassis design of its predecessor, the biggest change is the way that the rider cockpit area is designed and shaped. Basically, the rider interface is narrower (less bulk in the way), allowing the rider to move around more naturally.

The components that are changed include:
- 3″ Narrower Seat
- Tank
- Console
- Footwells
- Bodywork
Some of the MATRYX plastics are specific to the RMK lineup, including vented foils and fender. Also, the RMK MATRYX sleds offer less wind protection than their trail sled counterparts.
One other key improved to the RMK MATRYX sleds is a formed, one-piece standard-length tunnel with a tapered close-off that will help reduce drag in snow.
The tapered tunnel is paired with a centralized cooling system the provides improved cooling, along with less snow buildup.

While Polaris has been pushing the lightweight envelope for years, perhaps they’ve exhausted the possibilities of reasonably priced lightweight manufacturing because the RMK KHAOS MATRYX and PRO RMK MATRYX sleds are reportedly 1-2 lbs heavier than the AXYS versions. However, we’re confident that the improved riding ergonomics will easily offset the miniscule weight gain.
MATRYX RMK sleds will be available in-season with factory choice options.
MATRYX SLASH
The MATRYX SLASH sleds in both the PRO RMK and RMK KHAOS model groups will be the most advanced, high-performance models in the 2022 Polaris mountain snowmobiles lineup. Polaris describes these as a mod sled, straight from the factory.
So what’s different? Here we go.
Patriot Boost Option
First of all, the MATRYX SLASH sleds are the only mountain models that will feature the option of having the Patriot Boost engine.
That should make it easy for a lot of buyers right there. You want the turbo? Then your two choices are: RMK KHAOS MATRYX SLASH or PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH.
For those not ready to commit to boost, the 650 Patriot and 850 Patriot engines will also be offered in these models.

Short Tunnel
Another specific option is one that many mountain riders have been clamouring for. The MATRYX SLASH sleds will feature a 5” shorter tunnel than their standard MATRYX counterpart, along with a short snowflap.

By now everyone is should be pretty familiar with the benefits of a short tunnel and snowflap. The result is less drag in snow, better snow clearance, better wheelies, better turnouts, better everything.
Now, can we please never again be subject to another video of a sledder attacking the tunnel of their brand new snowmobile with a sawzall? Great, thanks.

Smaller Cooling System
In the interest of weight-savings, the MATRYX SLASH sleds will feature a smaller, more centralized cooling system.
This will provide some dry weight savings over the MATRYX versions of the same sleds, but more importantly there should also be less snow buildup on the rear of the tunnel.
Walker Evans Velocity Shocks on PRO RMK
The WE Racing Velocity Hi/Lo shocks will be an option on the PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH in addition to the standard WE Racing Light shocks. Velocity Hi/Lo shocks will remain standard equipment on all RMK KHAOS sleds.
7S Display
Polaris’ advanced, glove-friendly touch display with Ride Command Technology will come on all MATRYX SLASH sleds with Patriot Boost, and as an option for those without.
One of the most powerful features of the 7S Display is the ability to keep track of your riding group on the display, even out of mobile phone service.
The display also offers advanced vehicle information and on-board diagnostics, trails maps, points of interest and more.
Polaris MATRYX SLASH mountain sleds are SnowCheck exclusive.
Starfire Series
You might hear the term Starfire Series thrown around this year at SnowCheck. Basically, this is a special selection of Polaris’ most high performance, ultra-premium and purpose-built offerings. The PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH and RMK KHAOS MATRYX SLASH are examples of Starfire Series sleds.
These snowmobiles will offer exclusive features not available on other models, and will be SnowCheck only.

2022 Polaris Mountain Snowmobile Models
2022 RMK KHAOS MATRYX SLASH
Now isn’t that a mouthful? Oh well, who cares—when paired with Patriot Boost, this is the most progressive mountain snowmobile Polaris has produced to date. And that’s saying something!
The KHAOS MATRYX SLASH comes with three engine options—650 Patriot, 850 Patriot and Patriot Boost. You can pretty much eliminate the first option, because we don’t expect huge sales of a 650cc powerplant in this high-end model.
For fun factor and deep snow performance, this model offers the short tunnel and KHAOS rear suspension, which sure will play nicely together for mountain freeriding.
Up front is the 36-38” RMK React suspension that will continue to offer the predictable handing we’ve come to expect from the RMK Lineup.
Like all KHAOS models, the MATRYX SLASH will make use of Walker Evans Racing Velocity Hi/Lo shocks.

RMK KHAOS MATRYX SLASH track options:
- 15 x 146 x 2.0” Crossover
- 15 x 146 x 2.6” Series 6
- 15 x 155 x 2.75” Series 8
- 15 x 155 x 3” Series 7
- 15 x 165 x 2.75” Series 8
- 15 x 163 x 3” Series 7
Yep, you read that right! There will be two 146” length track options in the KHAOS MATRYX SLASH for those mountain freeriders wanting a short track mountain sled to shred. They will be available in a 2” lug aimed at crossover riders and a 2.6” lug that should be popular with the freestyle crowd.
RMK KHAOS MATRYX SLASH colour options:
- Stealth Gray / Gloss Black / Lime Squeeze
- Gloss Black / Matte Titanium
- Orange Burst / Gloss Black / Jade
2022 PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH
This model will bring all the benefits of the MATRYX SLASH to the PRO RMK. The biggest of these is the option for the Patriot Boost factory 2-stroke turbo powerplant. However, this model can also be SnowChecked with either the Patriot 650 or Patriot 850.
The PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH will feature the short, tapered tunnel and short snowflap, along with the shorter cooling system and lighter overall weight than the PRO RMK MATRYX.
Just like every other PRO RMK in the lineup, it will use the RMK React front suspension and the tried-and-true RMK rear suspension.
Unlike the other PRO RMKs, this sled can be ordered with the option of either Walker Evans Racing Light or upgrade to the Walker Evans Racing Velocity Hi/Lo shocks.
PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH track options:
- 15 x 155 x 2.75” Series 8
- 15 x 155 x 3” Series 7
- 15 x 165 x 2.75” Series 8
- 15 x 163 x 3” Series 7

PRO RMK MATRYX SLASH colour options:
- Stealth Gray / Ghost Gray / Lime Squeeze
- Matte Navy / Turbo Silver / White Lightning
- Indy Red / Gloss Black / White Lightning
- Gloss Black / Matte Titanium
- White Lightning / Gloss Black / Plum Crazy
- Gloss Black / Stealth Gray / Sky Blue
- Military Tan / Gloss Black / Orange Burst
2022 RMK KHAOS MATRYX
Okay, we’re starting to use less all-caps words now in each model name, and that’s doing us a finger favour! Carrying on.
The RMK KHAOS MATRYX model gives you everything you’d expect in the RMK KHAOS, only now with the MATRYX body and tapered tunnel (note: tapered only, not shortened). It won’t have nearly as many options to choose from, but for those who are interested in stepping into the MATRYX body without ponying up for a short tunnel and lighter weight SLASH model, here it is.
You’ll get all the benefits of the improved, narrower cockpit area of the MATRYX, along with the RMK React front suspension and RMK KHAOS rear suspension you’d expect. These will be controlled by the WER Velocity shocks.
The only option available is the Patriot 850 (fair enough). Track options also are limited to only the 15 x 155 x 2.75” Series 8.

- Stealth Gray / Gloss Black / Lime Squeeze
- Gloss Black / Matte Titanium
2022 PRO RMK MATRYX
No need to rehash all the glory of the MATRYX platform here, but we’ll touch on what sets the PRO RKM MATRYX apart from the KHAOS version.
First of all, the PRO RMK MATRYX will come with the option of either the Patriot 850 or Patriot 650 engine.
As the base MATRYX model, however, the shocks will be limited to the Walker Evans Racing Light monotube shocks only.
The MATRYX PRO RMK is available with either the 2.6” Series 6 track for versatility in all snow conditions, or the 2.75” Series 8 track with a 3.5” pitch. In the latter case, the QD2 belt drive system will be available.
2022 RMK MATRYX colour options:
- Stealth Gray / Ghost Gray / Lime Squeeze
- Matte Navy / Turbo Silver / White Lightning
- Indy Red / Gloss Black / White Lightning
- Gloss Black / Matte Titanium
- White Lightning / Gloss Black / Plum Crazy
- Gloss Black / Stealth Gray / Sky Blue
- Military Tan / Gloss Black / Orange Burst

2022 AXYS RMK KHAOS Models
Like all KHAOS models, the AXYS version will feature WER Velocity Hi/Lo shocks just like they did in 2021.
QuickDrive2 will be optional to complement the following track options:
- 15”x165”x2.75” Series 8
- 15”x163”x3.0” Series 7
- 15”x155”x2.75” Series 8
- 15”x155”x3.0” Series 7

2022 AXYS RMK KHAOS colour options:
- Stealth Gray / Lime Squeeze / Plum Crazy
- Stealth Black
- Matte Sand Metallic / Orange Burst
AXYS PRO RMK
Unlike the KHAOS version, the AXYS PRO RMK will come with the option of either WER Light or WER C/A shocks.
The SnowCheck exclusive QuickDrive2 will be optional as well. Track options include:
- 15”x165”x2.75” Series 8
- 15”x163”x3.0” Series 7
- 15”x155”x2.75” Series 8
- 15”x155”x3.0” Series 7

For colours, the 2022 AXYS PRO RMK will offer:
- Gloss Black / Stealth Gray
- Polaris Blue / Orange Burst
- Turbo Silver / Lime Squeeze
- Gloss Black / Indy Red
